VOLUNTEERS LEARN TO USE VOLLEYBALL INFORMATION SYSTEM
Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, September 9, 2015 - A Volleyball Information System workshop took place in both Tijuana and Mexicali as the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship is set to begin in the Baja California region of Mexico.
Members of the North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) coordinated the theoretical and practical sessions at the FIVB Regional Development Centre in Tijuana, as well as at the Ciudad Deportiva (Sports City) in Mexicali.
Many of the volunteers who attended the workshops are local high school students, as well as athletes who compete as part of the state sponsored Sports Talent Programme.
The volunteers demonstrated their interest in learning the art of describing and digitalising every play during a match. They learnt to use the official FIVB software, and also learnt how to record the data manually.
Some of the volleyball players who are part of the VIS team have played at Age-Group Pan American Cups, as well as at Age-Group World Championships. Marla Renee Arreola, for example, is the libero of the Mexican U18 squad.
Other players like Daniela de la Torre, Natalia Escoto and Veronica Gomez, who have also been called up to national age-troup teams, are also part of the training sessions as the Men’s U21 World Championship nears.
The sessions have been directed by Lorenzo Martinez in Tijuana, while in Mexicali Esteban Hernández and Julissa Chavez are in charge of preparing the groups just before the official practical clinics that are scheduled the day before the beginning of the tournament.
Martinez and Hernandez have worked for the NORCECA Confederation VIS Commission, while Chavez, who began as a VIS Volunteer almost seven years ago, has also contributed as a trainer for international events - at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico, in 2014 for example.
